In the northern regions of the world-renowned Okavango Delta of Botswana there exists a private 77000 acre stretch of pristine wilderness known as Duba Plains. Seasonal open floodplains, permanent water channels, wooded islands and riverine forests typify this scenically spectacular region of the Okavango and ensure year-round high concentrations of plains game and the associated predator populations. But it is the remarkable lion/buffalo interactions that undoubtedly steal the show at Duba.
Large herds of buffalo congregate on the fertile open plains on the islands surrounding Duba and their year-round presence has ensured that the lion prides of the region have perfected the art of hunting these powerful and aggressive grazers. Not only that, but quite unlike most lions in Africa, they seem to prefer hunting these buffalo in broad daylight. This titanic struggle for survival makes for some spectacular wildlife viewing and has elevated Duba and the 'Duba Lions' to legendary status among safari enthusiasts throughout the world.
The lions, and the lion/buffalo interaction, have been featured on two National Geographic films - 'Relentless Enemies' and the recently released 'The Last Lions', both filmed by well-known wildlife filmmakers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert.
To experience one of Africa's true wildlife spectacles read more about the privacy, intimacy and remoteness of Duba Plains Camp, the luxury tented camp that forms the base for exploring this special part of Botswana.
