The South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia is widely regarded as one of Africa’s iconic wilderness areas with breathtaking scenery and prolific wildlife viewing throughout the year. Large herds of elephants, excellent leopard viewing, some of the highest concentrations of crocodiles and hippos in the world and a wide variety of antelope species are but a few of the many wildlife attractions that keep international tourists flooding back for more.
As with many wilderness regions in Africa there is a very definite 'wet season' that often results in the closure of lodges and camps due to high water levels, restricted access and reduced area for game viewing activities. It is however during this time that much of Africa is at its most beautiful. Rivers and lakes are full and spectacular, migratory birds have returned, many of the wildlife species have had their young and the bush is at its most vibrant and active. It seems such a pity that so few visitors get to experience this special time in Africa. And the South Luangwa is no different! During the so-called 'Emerald Season' the Luangwa River, that meanders the length of the national park, swells into a huge network of lagoons, flooded ebony groves and winding channels that transforms the region completely and offers an altogether different safari experience. Boating becomes a unique way of uncovering and exploring normally inaccessible parts of the Luangwa Valley and coupled with the more traditional bush walks and game drives, guests are treated to an all-round safari adventure at a fraction of the high season rate.
