There is one thing about Cape Tonians...they LOVE their mountain! This has clearly shown through in Table Mountain being voted in as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. The results were announced in Cape Town on Friday evening...and after being at number 10 on the list, with a massive final marketing push, Table Mountain made it into the top 7 - claiming a temporary win (final result confirmations are only being released early 2012)!

I am in a unique position, I am an ex-Cape Tonian (now living on the tropical KZN shores), so I can speak with some authority about 'The Mountain'. I was also one of those rare Cape Town residents that actually used this magic piece of nature. When you get local and start speaking to people who live in Cape Town, you will be amazed how many have NEVER been up! I found it astonishing...One of my favourite things to do at the end of a day in the office was walking up the fynbos clad gorges to watch the city unwind. It takes about 15 minutes to get away from the hustle, from the noise, from people. Another hour and you are on the top! How many, living in a city of a few million people, have this unique opportunity?

Those Cape Tonians who have never been up the mountain are really missing out. The proof is in the pudding with over 20 million people summiting Table Mountain since the first cable way carrying 20 passengers, set off on the 4th October 1929. I am well pleased I didn’t have to travel in that cable car - with its tin roof and wooden sides! Now you access the mountain using the Rotair Cableway System - one of only 3 systems in the world.

But I am not here to talk technical stuff. I am here to punt my Mountain! It really is a special place and offers a unique experience in a world class city. Whether you are in Cape Town for business or pleasure, whether you are living there or passing briefly through, whether you are active or not - Table Mountain is always present - there is just no getting away. I remember having a Canadian visitor once in August - he was in Cape Town for a week, the mountain was shrouded in cloud the entire week, barely visible (August is the middle of winter) - but there was NO WAY he was leaving Cape Town without standing on the top! So we went...he has the pictures...not that you can see much!

This is the type of aura that surrounds this special mountain and its host city. With the New7Wonders campaign, we have managed to extend Table Mountain and Cape Town’s global reach. They are securely on the world map. This can only be good for all of us in South Africa, even if the Cape Tonians think they are the special ones!

Handy TIPS:
· If you buy your ticket to the top of the mountain online and in advance - you skip the ticket queue and you save 10%!
· Always take something warm up the mountain with you. It is usually about 6 degrees cooler on the top.
