Savute Safari Lodge, Chobe Region, Botswana

Overlooking the Savuti Channel, near the Savuti Marsh in central Chobe National Park

Travellers looking for an exceptional Botswana safari experience will be delighted with Savute Safari Lodge. Situated in the south west of the world-famous Chobe National Park, Savute Safari Lodge overlooks the Savute Channel, a fascinating river which began flowing again in late 2009 after a curious 28 year absence.

Activities introduce guests to the varied ecosystems that Chobe National Park's 5,000 km2 Savute area encompasses. Experienced guides will point out a multitude of different environments, from the Savute Marsh - which has also recently welcomed the life-giving waters of the Savute Channel - to the waterlogged Marabou Pans and the rocky outcrops of the Gubatsa Hills with its ancient San rock paintings.

Wildlife at Savute is phenomenal: the area is home to the rare roan antelope, the endangered African wild dog, plus leopards, cheetahs and large herds of zebra, tsessebe and wildebeest. Savute is also well known for its incredible concentration of lions -one pride recently numbered as many as 40 before splintering into two smaller groups. The Savute area of Chobe National Park is further renowned for its elephant herds, and Savute Safari Lodge is unique in featuring an established waterhole next to its viewing deck which attracts elephants - sometimes in their hundreds - day and night.

Between game drives, guests can relax on the deck at Savute Safari Lodge's swimming pool, watching the animals as they make their way down to the Savute Channel to drink or bathe. Other facilities include the ground floor lounge and cocktail bar, and a first floor wildlife reference library tucked under the eaves of the thatch and timber main building. A separate dining room - which also doubles as a conference room - is a sheltered location for breakfast and brunch, while the lodge's stunning al fresco viewing deck affords a superb panorama over the Savute Channel and the elephant waterhole for guests enjoying high tea, dinner and fireside nightcaps.

Accommodating a maximum of 24 guests, the spacious rooms at Savute Safari Lodge consist of traditional thatch and timber, with en-suite bathrooms and open plan bedroom and lounge areas. Private wooden viewing decks - many overlooking the Savute Channel - span the entire width of each room, while glass sliding doors allow natural light to flood in.
