Mvuu Camp is attractively situated amongst riverine vegetation on the banks of the Shire River in the Liwonde National Park. An affordable no 'frills' camp it has been designed with families and small groups in mind. A particularly rewarding way of arriving at Mvuu Camp is by boat from Liwonde town. This river trip takes guests 30 km along the Shire River, offering an excellent opportunity to see a profusion of hippos, crocodiles and the amazing birdlife that Liwonde National Park is famous for. During the rainy summer months of January to March thousands of migrant birds are a sight to behold - particularly the blue cheeked bee eaters, alpine swifts and African skimmers.
Mvuu Camp accommodates up to 34 guests in seven spacious 'tented' chalets constructed out of shade cloth, canvas and thatch and five specially designed family units each with two bedrooms with shared shower and toilet. The 'tented' chalets vary slightly in design and a couple of them are set back from the river. Campers from the nearby campsite are welcome to utilize Mvuu Camp's facilities including the bar, dining room, boma and swimming pool.
The main guest areas consist of an impressive thatched dining and lounge area that offer a magnificent river vista framed by two large baobab trees. Dinners are sometimes held under the stars in a specially constructed boma and the swimming pool provides welcome respite from the heat.
Mvuu Camp guests can enjoy either a game drive into Liwonde National Park or a boat excursion along the majestic Shire River, which forms the western boundary of the park and is a magnet to all manner of fauna to its banks. Nature walks are available as an optional activity and guests don't have to leave camp to enjoy some superb birding. Guided bicycle excursions to nearby villages are popular and rewarding as visitors gain an insight into day to day rural life in Malawi. Due to the size of Mvuu Camp and the fact non-residents sometimes book onto game drives or boat cruises all possible is done to avoid mixing birders with non-birders and separating families with young children from couples and older guests.
Mvuu Camp is involved in a number of community initiatives and has played an instrumental part in the building Nanthomba and Kafulafula schools that between them provide education to over 1400 children.
