Pestana Bazaruto Lodge, Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Located on the northern tip of Bazaruto Island, a mere 20 minute scenic air shuttle from Vilanculos

Pestana Bazaruto Lodge is situated on the largest of the four islands that make up the unspoilt Bazaruto Archipelago, often referred to as the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean'. Situated about 30 km east of mainland Mozambique, Bazaruto Island is approximately 37km long and 7km at its widest point. The only inhabitants are traditional fisherman many of whom are not permanent but migrate in constant search of good fishing. Dominated by a ridge of high sand dunes Bazaruto Island is the quintessential island paradise with its turquoise waters and swathes of golden beaches.

Surrounded by azure seas and fabulous beaches Pestana Bazaruto offers a relaxed African island experience. Spread out along the beach in a tropical garden setting dotted with swaying palm trees are 40 unpretentious thatched roof A-frame bungalows. Each standard, superior and family bungalow is equipped with an air conditioner, ceiling fan, bath, outdoor shower and loungers on the beach - all but 13 bungalows have a stunning ocean view.

Meals are buffet style and taken in the restaurant, with African drums announcing dinner every evening. For those wanting to spend the day at the beach, a picnic basket is available. Guests can enjoy the use of a swimming pool, bar, games room, small spa which offers hot stone therapy and relaxing massages, a Kid's Club and fully equipped Activities Centre with resident dive instructor.

Located on a bay at the northern tip of Bazaruto Island the area immediately in front of the lodge becomes a tidal flat at low tide. As the ocean recedes for up to a kilometre, flocks of birds, especially waders, forage for crustaceans in shallow pools close to the shore thus providing great birding opportunities. During low tide guests can either take a leisurely walk to nearby Dolphin Bay or be transferred to the beach at Coral Gardens on the opposite side of the island. From Coral Gardens it is possible to experience some great snorkelling directly from the beach.
