Already a gastronomy capital the Western Cape is world renowned for its vineyards and fine wines, its award winning chefs and internationally famed restaurants. Just off the well-known Route 62 and a small detour from the Garden Route is African Relish, fast becoming known as a gourmet destination for recreational cooks and explorers who enjoy fine cuisine.
The African Relish kitchen is set in an olive orchard in the Karoo town of Prince Albert. It is the only purpose built facility of its kind in South Africa. Here guests will discover the culinary essence of South Africa. With its indefinable qualities of hospitality and sense of place in South Africa’s history Prince Albert is the perfect location for a gourmet getaway . The local area is famed for its abundance of olives, figs, stone fruit, speciality products such as Gays' Guernsey dairy and cheese, and Lucas Jamon a locally cured ham. And don't forget the vineyards including Soet Karoo and Bergwater.
Executive chef Vanie Padayachee, conducts a selection of seasonal and themed cooking courses. With both Vanie and an array of other specialist South African and visiting chefs, the emphasis will be on learning and enjoyment. Individually tailored itineraries are made to suit the culinary desires of guests and to suit their calendar. Courses for up to 14 guests run throughout the year.
Ingredients in our courses and the restaurant are fresh, organic and governed by the seasons. The recipes reflect the core and heritage of South African cuisine influenced by African, Dutch, French, English, Indian and Malay culture. Visits are made to local producers, farms and markets for an interactive experience.
Accommodation is luxurious and stylish and consists of handpicked and renovated cottages in the charming Karoo town. African Relish is not only a cooking school but a place to gather and enjoy time with friends and make new ones. Various activities and excursions are available including botanical walks, cycling, hiking, a town ghost walk and horse riding.
