Liwonde National Park

Liwonde National Park, Malawi - Dana Allen, Wilderness Safaris

Malawi's longest established wildlife reserve, Liwonde National Park, is situated under 100kms from the southern shore of the mighty Lake Malawi. This 580km² wilderness area lies adjacent to Lake Malombe and the upper Shire River and is characterised by swamps, riverine forests, open grassland and deciduous and mopane woodlands.

A birding mecca with specials like Pel's fishing owls, Lilian's lovebirds and palmnut vultures, Liwonde also boasts some of the best and most scenic wildlife viewing in Malawi. Large populations of elephant, hippos and crocodiles are supported by the beautiful waters of the Shire River and the grasslands, woodlands and riverine forests sustain vast numbers of sable antelope, kudu, impala and bushbuck. There is also an opportunity of seeing the more elusive leopard, hyena or lion that occur in Liwonde and thanks to reintroduction programmes black rhino are doing well here although they are often very difficult to find.

Minimal accommodation ensures that Liwonde remains a low density, non-commercialised wilderness refuge that affords visitors an authentic, varied and very rewarding safari experience.
