Mozambique Regions
Mozambique: Weather
Mozambique is situated in the southern hemisphere and broadly follows the same weather pattern as the rest of southern Africa with rains falling during the hot, humid, summer months of December to March.
With a coastline that stretches for approximately 3,000km, the north of the country enjoys a tropical climate and the south and coastal areas a sub-tropical climate. Temperatures and rainfall can vary greatly between the different regions as the northern areas have a longer rainy season than the south. The highest temperatures and humidity year round can generally be found in the Pemba area and the Zambezi valley while the high altitude regions in the Nampula and Niassa provinces are the coolest.
The best months for game viewing are August and September, towards the end of the dry season. The best time for bird-watching is usually November and December, which is the hot, rainy season. Best fishing is from October to March. Diving and snorkelling is spectacular all year round.
Predicting the weather the world over is becoming more and more difficult and Mozambique is no exception. The following is a guideline of what visitors to the magical island destinations off the coast of Mozambique can expect:
| January | 28–35°C hot and humid with summer rains in the form of short sharp showers |
| February | 28–38°C hot and windy as February is traditionally cyclone season in the Indian Ocean. It should be noted the Quirimbas Archipelago lies outside and to the north of the cyclone belt. Possible storms in the afternoon |
| March | 25–30°C cooling down. Little rain |
| April | 25–30°C the rain has subsided and the weather has settled |
| May | 20–28°C a lovely sunny month |
| June | 18–27°C dry with clear skies and plenty of sun although it may be cool at night |
| July/August | 15–25°C the coolest months of the year but still warm enough to swim |
| September | 18-28°C warming up again. Possible wind but rain unlikely |
| October | 22–30°C day time temperatures are starting to climb |
| November | 22-33°C hot and slightly unpredictable. Rains generally start towards the end of the month |
| December | 23–36°C hot and humid with short sharp showers |
