Caprivi Region

The 450 km long Caprivi Strip, in northeastern Namibia, is the countries most tropical region and shares international boundaries with Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. A rich tapestry of woodlands, floodplain grasslands, lily-carpeted waterways and riverine forests merge in this area, creating scenery unlike anything else in the country. With a checklist of over 450 species, Caprivi is the top birding destination in Namibia. Visitors keen on game viewing have a selection of Game Parks to choose from with a range of accommodation from ultimate luxury to comfortable camping basics. Angling is another attraction and Caprivi ranks as one of the top tiger-fishing destinations. The major centre in Caprivi, and gateway to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the Chobe National Park in Botswana, is Katima Mulilo. Here, visitors will find exquisite crafts made by Caprivian artists, including the Caprivi pots and baskets, which are noted for their distinctive beauty and symmetry and the many craft centres in the area are well worth visiting. A four-wheel drive is essential and visits should coincide with the dry season to avoid impassable roads during the rainy season.
