Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania - Ian Johnson

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area stretches from the Karatu Highlands to the Serengeti. Ngorongoro was once a mountain as high as Kilimanjaro which about 3 million years ago, blew up, covering the Serengeti in ash. This resulted in the crater floor sinking and leaving a rim to form a natural enclosure 2,285 metres high. Your first visit will be one to remember, as you slowly ascend through the mountains you will feel it getting colder and colder. As you reach the rim, you will see the Crater dropping in front of you. Your first glimpse of the "Garden of Eden" as it is often referred to. The rich grazing land and permanent water of the crater floor is a haven for a large population of animals. It is one of the most densely crowded game areas in the world and home to over 30, 000 animals, including endangered species like the black rhino and cheetah.
