South Luangwa

Game viewing at South Luangwa National Park is considered to be some of the best in the world and plays host to 60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species. The South Luangwa is also famous for its incredible leopard sightings. The park has a considerable elephant population and hosts many of the endemic Thornicroft giraffe which can always be found in the prolific Mopane woodland on the valley floor.
The now famous 'walking safari' originated in the South Luangwa and is still one of the finest ways to experience the sights, sounds and smells of this is pristine wilderness first hand. Experienced guides can show guests the indicators of the wild, 'rewinding' the action of the last few hours from just a few small giveaway signs. See where an elephant stopped to browse, where a leopard scratched a tree or a pangolin rolled into a ball. It's not just the big animals that are fascinating - termites, dung beetles and chameleons all have their stories to tell too .The hippopotamus is one animal you won't miss. As you cross over the bridge into the park there are usually between 30 and 70 hippos lounging in the river below and there is estimated to be at least 50 hippos per kilometre of the Luangwa River!
